Case Study: Troubleshooting Rooftop Chiller Issues

Overview

In 2024, a major colocation facility in Northern Virginia was experiencing trouble with their rooftop chiller. The client sought to visually map the temperature around the chiller to diagnose the issue. Purkay Labs utilized their AUDIT-BUDDY system to monitor and collect data, revealing significant recirculation of warm exhaust air. This information enabled the client to plan necessary design modifications to prevent internal component failures. The client intends to implement these changes and call Purkay Labs back to confirm the problem has been resolved.

The Project

Purkay Labs deployed four AUDIT-BUDDY systems, strategically placed to measure temperatures at four different heights: 104 inches, 80 inches, 57 inches, and 34 inches. The objective was to gather comprehensive temperature data around the chiller and identify any abnormal patterns or hotspots that could be contributing to the operational issues.

The AUDIT-BUDDY systems were positioned around the chiller to capture real-time temperature data at the specified heights. The data collected revealed a significant amount of recirculation air. Warm exhaust air from the chiller was hitting a nearby wall and then returning to the unit. This recirculation increased the risk of internal component failure, providing a clear explanation for the client’s operational concerns.

The Results

The findings enabled the client to understand the extent and impact of the air recirculation issue. With this critical insight, they could plan effective solutions to mitigate the problem. Potential solutions included adding a hood or other design modifications to redirect the exhaust air and prevent it from re-entering the chiller. The client plans to implement these changes and subsequently engage Purkay Labs to confirm the effectiveness of the modifications through further temperature mapping.
